SUMMARY:Pyramid Lake Fishout
DESCRIPTION:Fishmaster: Mike White\nThe Pyramid Lake trip is one of the bes
t-attended fishouts the club has\, and for a good reason. Lahontan Cut-thr
oat Trout cruise parallel to the shore in easy casting distance from shore
. Cost for the week including meals and lodging and is around $300-plus pe
r person depending on the number in attendance. You need not fish all six
days as there may be openings (usually later in the week.) Contact Mike fo
r more details (831) 706-5556\, to check on openings\, or be put on a wait
ing list. First come first served. You can also make your own arrangements
either by bringing your own RV (Pyramid Lake Lodge has hook-ups and sells
permits to park on the any of the beaches along the lake) or staying in Re
no. Reno is 45 minutes away. Call Pyramid Lake Lodge to in-quire about las
t minute cancellations in their cabins as well (775) 476-0400 and check ou
t their website to see what the cabins look like at www.pyramidlake-lodge.
com. The General Store in Sutcliff offers meals on selected nights only to
those who call in before 2:00 PM. Check at the General Store for details.
\n\nEquipment: 6-9 weight rods with hi-speed\, hi-D shooting heads or fast
sink integrated lines to fish the bottom in 6 to 9 feet of water\, and a
floating line for indicator fishing. You should bring a stripping basket a
nd a ladder that will accommodate it. A ladder helps to get you up out of
the cold water and enables you to cast out to where the fish are. You can
still catch fish without one but not with nearly as much consistency.\n\nF
 lies: Woolly buggers in black\, white\, purple\, olive\, midge\, caddis an
d mayfly nymphs to name a few. Flies may also available from club member J
im Hall who ties some very good flies specific to Pyramid cutthroat as wel
l as other species at reason-able cost. His number is (831) 713-6835. Ther
e is a general store with provisions as well as tackle and an assortment o
f flies.\n\nHow to get there: Take US 80 to Reno-Sparks\, take the Pyramid
Blvd. off ramp and go north about 35 miles. Crosby Lodge is at Sutcliff\,
near the Ranger Station. If you have any questions about equipment or how
to get there\, check the “Gearing up” columns in the March 2007-2009 a
rchives on our great club website\, or call Mike White at (831) 706-5556.I
f you are considering going to Pyramid again this year with the club and y
ou have not already done so\, please contact the person who is booking the
trailer you stayed in last year. Trailer-masters\, if your trailer has ga
ps or cancellations\, you can call Mike so he can pass the names of member
s who don’t have lodging to fill the empty spots.\n\nFishing\, Camping\,
and New Ladder Regulation: Fishing and camping permits can be purchased o
nline prior to the fish-out. We would highly recommend doing this. Go to w
ww.plpt.nsn.us to obtain your licenses. There is also an RV Park available
  at (775) 476-1155.Pyramid Lake Fishout\, March 15th-21st\, 2020\n\nAs wit
h any great fishery there are always a long list of rules and regulations.
We would recommend you review them on the website above. Suffice to say t
hose of us who have been go-ing to Pyramid Lake for many years are a good
source of infor-mation as well. We will help inform and guide all newcomer
 s.\n\n15.6 USE OF LADDERS\, ETC.Any ladders\, milk crates\, boxes or other
objects used in the water as a fishing aid must be occupied or closely at
tended (i.e. remain in the area) by fishermen at all times. Any person who
leaves such objects unoccupied in the water for more than one hour will b
e deemed guilty of littering. 15.6.1 Fishing aids described above must hav
e a permanent tag affixed that has the name\, address\, and phone number o
f the owner of the fishing aid. If the permitted angler using the fishing
aid is not the owner\, the owner will be the responsible party for any inf
ractions by the permitted angler.\n\nLast year I observed people parked cl
oser than 100 feet to the lake. I asked several of them about it\, and the
response was the Rangers weren’t enforcing it. This prompted me to cont
act the lead Ranger by phone. He said\, “We are most definitely going to
enforce the 100-foot ordinance!” So\, when parking your vehicle\, you m
ust be a minimum of 100 feet from the lake’s water line. Also\, you need
a permanent tag affixed to your ladder with your name\, address\, and pho
ne number on it. Most of us who use fiberglass ladders use a heavy black m
agic marker to write the necessary information directly on the ladder. The
re are also tags which can be purchased from local fly shops\, for a fee.\
n\nThis year I have four trailers reserved. (6\,7\,8\, and 9) As of Novemb
er 1st 2019 all trailers are full. Of course\, we will always try to accom
modate any newcomers\, so contact Mike at (831) 706-5556 and we will figur
e out a way for you to experi-ence the thrill of catching a 10-plus pound
LCT. You can always make your own arrangements by contacting the Pyramid L
 ake Lodge at (775) 476-0400.Mike White (831) 706-5556\, lumberguy73@hotmai
l.com\n\nNOTE: Due to insurance regulations\, all attendees must be paid u
p members of Santa Cruz Fly fishermen\, so get your member-ship paid up if
  you haven’t done so yet.

DESCRIPTION:Roy Gunter writes:   I am offering to sponsor a fishout to th

be fishing the Kenai River\, Russian River and nearby creeks\, targeting r
ainbows and dolly varden\, but catching many salmon along the way. Trip in
cludes 2 guided trips on the Kenai River\, including at least one boat tri

SUMMARY:Palm Beach
DESCRIPTION:The Forebay fish-out Stosh organized is the second weekend of O
ctober\, so I have moved our surf fish-out to the first Saturday in Octobe
r (2nd) so everyone can participate in both.\n&nbsp\;\nSunrise is at 07:04
\, and we will meet at 0640. High tide (+4.2’) is at 09:17\, so we will
fish a flood tide. Some people believe this is the best tide to fish as th
e fish will be coming in to feed on critters untouched in the sand for sev
eral hours. I can’t personally say one way or the other\, as I have caug
ht fish in the surf at all stages of tide. It seems to be more a case of w
hether or not they see what I am offering and are they biting it?\nI will
have flies (free)\, stripping baskets ($20 to the Club) and brand new wadi
ng belts ($10 to repay my cost) available.\n&nbsp\;\nGetting there: Take W
est Beach out of Watsonville all the way towards the ocean until you are m
ired in the sand. You went just a bit too far\, so back up your 4WD about
100 feet and park on the right under the Eucalyptus trees that drip and st
ain your vehicle when they are wet. (Hint: Wash it off right away when you
get home.)\nBTW\, I like the State Beaches\, because when you are done\,
there is a shower nearby to wash the sand off your waders and salt off you
r gear before heading home.\nThis is our last “organized” surf fish-ou
t for 2021.  Last month most everyone caught fish or had hook-ups. Let’
 s do it again!

SUMMARY:O'Neill Forebay - Oct 7 - 10 2021
DESCRIPTION:The annual O'Neill ForeBay Striped Bass FishOut has been schedu
led for Oct 7-10 and Nov 4-7 (Thurs-Sunday). I made it during the dark pha
se of the moon this year.\n\nWe will camp at the same place again at Medei
ros Campground site #23 I will try to get again\, there are 4 sites there
and more than one car per site is okay. New people should contact me perso
nally for details. Bring everything to camp bare bones style\, only a sing
le vault style toilet which is not too bad compared to the other porta pot
ties throughout the campground.  Bring water\, and food and cooking gear\
, there will be a camp stove or two to use or cook over the camp fire.\n\n
Gear to use: 7 or 8 wt rod\, full sinking line like Rio Outbound Short or
Tungsten T-11 shooting head with a good running line. 15 lb test fluorocar
bon leader (6' is long enough so the fly gets down deeper).  Lee Haskins
or Jim Hall has flies for sale. Both are listed in our club roster and you
can make an order directly with them. Float tubes of course or small craf
t like flat bottom dingy's and some kayaks work okay except when windy. (I
t can really BLOW you away there and we hope for good conditions but we ha
ve had big rainstorms in years past so prepare for the worst).\n\nOne thin
g we never have enough of is firewood for the evening rap sessions\, the s
ize of wood that comes in a box at the grocery store is perfect for our po
rtable fire tubs.\n\nThe camp is only 70 miles from Santa Cruz and directi
ons can be easily be found on your GPS system.  Call or email me @ 831 46
2 4532 or ssrudzinski@gmail.com to be on the list so I have a good idea of
how many will attend.  We always have a good time at this event.  See y
 ou there\, Stosh\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 7 is our 2022 kick-off for our club sponsored su

limited parking outside\, so if there is none when you get there\, procee
d on to Oceanview Drive\, turn right\, then right again to a large parking
lot. There are access stairs to the beach which will bring you out just a
hundred yards or less from where the rest of us will be.  We will work m
ostly to the right (north) of where those stairs exit.\n\nThis area has be
en pretty productive in years past for Stripers\, although I don’t know
if many are being caught this year.\n\nHigh tide is about 03:20 at 4.3’\
, Low tide is 10 am\, so we will be fishing the middle of an ebb tide. Sun
rise is 06:06\, but there will be plenty of light at 05:45.\n\nPlease revi

DESCRIPTION:Our Santa Cruz Fly Fishing Club will be joined by the Salinas F
ly Casters for our June 4 surf fishing outing. I am optimistic that we wil
l have several experienced folks there to welcome the Salinas members and
give advice and support to anyone who may not have fished the surf with a
fly rod. For those interested\, we’ll have a short “talk about it” s
ession in the parking lot and another up on the dunes overlooking the beac
h to point out how to read the water.\n\nWhy start so early\, 05:30 am? We
ll\, the days now are really long and best results are to start early\, be
fore daybreak to be on the beach before lots of other people are there fis
hing and walking their dogs\, so we traditionally start a bit before offic
ial sunrise. On that Saturday morning we’ll be fishing a high slack tide
at first\, moving to an ebb tide.\n\nEveryone is welcome. If new\, please
read the article here Santa Cruz Fly Fishing under the dropdown link “K
nowledge”. Then call or email me if you have questions. Lots of us are e
xperienced and will help\, just ask.\n\nIf you are a very beginner caster
you will be frustrated\, so do your time on a schoolyard first. Casting th
e surf with a heavier weight rod and sinking line is way different than a
5 weight rod and floating line you learn with.\n\nTake West Beach Drive ou

be open\, so park outside. I will have a few stripping baskets (a strippin

ill have a batch of basic\, but effective flies for anyone that wants some
. Please try to be rigged and ready soon after arriving\, maybe string you

SUMMARY:Alaska Trip - 2022
DESCRIPTION:Fish the Kenai River and nearby streams on the Kenai Peninsula\
, Alaska on Saturday August 13\, 2022 through Sunday August 21\, 2022 with
Roy Gunter (Tel. 831-809-0316\; email rgunteriii@yahoo.com). The fishout
Includes the following:\n\nlodging in the River Front Cabin at Eagle Landi
ng Resort in Cooper Landing (www.eaglelandingresort.net/cabins)\;\nall mea
ls cooked by Roy at the cabin\;\nlarge rented SUV\; and\n3 guided boat tri
ps down the Kenai River Canyon to Skilak Lake delta.\n\nWe are primarily t
argeting rainbow and dolly varden trout by wading and fly fishing with sal
mon egg flies/beads\, but catch a lot of salmon along with the trout. Reco
mmend 6 wt 10' rod\, but 7-8 wt 9' or 10' rods are OK. If you want to keep
the entire cost of the trip under $2\,000\, including airfare and all oth
er expenses\, then obtaining an Alaska Airlines credit card to book trip o
n miles is highly recommended. I have booked my direct flights on Alaska A
irlines from San Francisco to Anchorage as follows: Flight 707 leaving San
Francisco at 8:15 AM 8/13/22 arriving 11:15 AM and Flight 1487 leaving An
chorage at 11:59 AM 8/21/22 arriving in San Francisco at 6:35 PM. Other cl
ub members that have fished with me in Alaska include Mark Traugott\, Bob
Monoco\, Bob Garbarino\, Harry Petrakis\, Gil Santos\, Keith Munger and Do
n Foskett. Michael DiCiano also has a lot of experience fishing the Kenai
River. Anyone interested should contact any of these individuals for an un
biased report. I have fished Alaska's inland fresh waters for trout almost
every year since 1991. If you can hike to a river from a highway around t
he Kenai River or near the towns of Talkeetna and Seward\, then I have pro
bably been there. There are spots for 3 fishermen who have been vaccinated
for Covid. If interested\, please contact Roy to chat about the trip.\nCo

SUMMARY:Rio Del Mar Beach
DESCRIPTION:Our last organized surf fishing outing for 2022 is Saturday\, O

t 07 am. After fishing\, those interested will stop at Pixie Deli for brea
 kfast burritos\, coffee\, beer\, whatever. They open at 09 am.\n\nThis is
an unusual tidal situation\, with high tide of 3.5 ft at 04:12 am\, follow
ed by low tide of 2.6 ft at 8 am\, less than 4 hours later. Net result wil
l be little tidal activity as the change is less than one foot.\n\nTake Ri
o Del Mar Blvd. all the way to the flats next to the beach\, circle the ro
und-a-bout and continue east on Beach Drive until you arrive at the state
park. Parking is outside\, since the parking lot doesn’t open for anothe
r hour or more. BTW\, there is an outdoor shower there to wash the sand an
d salt off when you are through fishing.\n\nIn September we had 20 people
with a good bit of success\, so if you aren’t “gone fishing” somewhe
re else\, please join us.\n\nFor newbies\, PLEASE read the section on surf

SUMMARY:Lake Almanor/Hex Hatch - Jun 25 - Jul 1 2023 - New Info
DESCRIPTION:\n\nThe Lake Almanor fishout is scheduled for the last week of
 June\, 6/24 thru 7/1\, 2023. This time period is\, hopefully\, the peak of
the annual Hexagenia hatch that begins generally mid-June and runs throug
h mid-July. The most productive fishing takes place early evenings on into
past dark between Lake Almanor West to Canyon Dam on the SouthWest side o
f the lake. Most of the fishing is done from float tubes as well as small
boats or even from shore.\n\nIn addition to the evening "Hex" hatch\, a mu
ltitude of opportunities exist for fishing throughout the day to include L
ittle Crater Lake\, Manzanita Lake\, Baum Lake\, Eagle Lake\, Butt Valley
 Reservoir\, Deer Creek\, Clear Creek\, Feather River\, Yellow Creek\, plus
many more.\n\nLodging will be the responsibility of individual attendees.
A popular campground operated by PG&amp\;E is the Rocky Point Campground\
, for reservation information call 916-386-5164. Many USFS campgrounds are
in the area. Reservations are available through www.recreation.gov or by
calling 877-444-6777. Make use of internet resources to acquire the actual
campground names. There are also many resorts and rental cabins available
in the area. A few examples are Wilson's Camp/530-259-2267 and Plumas Pin
es Resort/530-259-4343. Other options are available via online research. B
e advised that due to the popularity of fishing at this time of year reser
vations fill up early.\n\nSierra Fly and Tackle\, stores in Chester and Ha
milton Branch\, is a great resource for current conditions and reports alo
ng with a large invantory flies and equipment. A must stop for all visitin
g fly fishers if only to get one of their cool tee-shirts. Both first time
and veteran "Hex" Anglers could well benefit from the expertise provided
by a knowledgeable and experienced guide. Lance Gray (530-517-2204) or Tim
Loomis (831-345-8411) both offer instructional packages to help achieve s
 uccess during the "Hex".\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Loreto Fly Fishing Trip July 2023
DESCRIPTION:Sign Up Now! Experience a new HIGH! Fish for Dorado\, and many
 other salt-water fish\, including Bonito\, Roosters\, Yellowtail and Sailf
ish on a fly! Join the group going to Loreto in Baja\nSunday\, July 16th t
hrough Thursday\, July 20th.\nThis trip includes:\n\n Four nights at the
beautiful Hotel La Mission\, on the water-front next to the Loreto Harbor.
\n Three days of fishing on 24-foot Super Pangas\, with fly fishing guide
s.\n Ground transfers and fishing licenses.\n\nThe fishing day starts aro
und 6:00 a.m. and we usually get back to the harbor between 1:30 and 2:00
p.m. Spend the rest of the afternoon fishing from the beach\, having a coo
l drink in the pool\, exploring Loreto\, or just sitting around telling so
me tall fish stories. And\, you will have many exciting moments on the Sea
of Cortez to talk about.\n\nThe approximate cost for everything but meals
  and airfare is: *$900.00 per person\, double occupancy\; around $460.00 f
or a non-fishing guest. It does not include meals because there are some n
ice restaurants (A lot of fresh seafood!) in town or if you prefer\, eat a
t the hotel\, where they will also cook your catch to your preference. Int
erested?\n\nPlease contact Rich Hughett\, 831-757-5709\, for all the detai
ls. You will need to book airline flights* as soon as possible.\n\n*No mon
ey will be collected in advance. Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines fr
om San Jose to  Los Angeles and Alaska Airlines to Loreto. Rich will help
with your airline reservations.\n\nGear: The minimum size rod for Dorado
is a 10 weight\, with a corresponding size reel with plenty of backing.
I suggest everyone take floating\, intermediate and full sink lines\, such
as T-14.  Most fish down there are not leader shy\, so I use about a 5 f
oot leader with a 20 pound tippet.  For Dorado\, the main fly is a Sarmul
mac.  Clousers also work.  In fact a variety of flies work for salt wate
 r fish\, as long as they represent a smaller baitfish.\n\nNotes: Further d
iscussion of dates\, gear and preparations to be had as interest develops\

completely.\n\nThe Middle-Fork of the Stanislaus River flows along highway
