SUMMARY:Pyramid Lake Fishout
DESCRIPTION:Fishmaster: Mike White\nThe Pyramid Lake trip is one of the bes
t-attended fishouts the club has\, and for a good reason. Lahontan Cut-thr
oat Trout cruise parallel to the shore in easy casting distance from shore
. Cost for the week including meals and lodging and is around $300-plus pe
r person depending on the number in attendance. You need not fish all six
days as there may be openings (usually later in the week.) Contact Mike fo
r more details (831) 706-5556\, to check on openings\, or be put on a wait
ing list. First come first served. You can also make your own arrangements
either by bringing your own RV (Pyramid Lake Lodge has hook-ups and sells
permits to park on the any of the beaches along the lake) or staying in Re
no. Reno is 45 minutes away. Call Pyramid Lake Lodge to in-quire about las
t minute cancellations in their cabins as well (775) 476-0400 and check ou
t their website to see what the cabins look like at www.pyramidlake-lodge.
com. The General Store in Sutcliff offers meals on selected nights only to
those who call in before 2:00 PM. Check at the General Store for details.
\n\nEquipment: 6-9 weight rods with hi-speed\, hi-D shooting heads or fast
sink integrated lines to fish the bottom in 6 to 9 feet of water\, and a
floating line for indicator fishing. You should bring a stripping basket a
nd a ladder that will accommodate it. A ladder helps to get you up out of
the cold water and enables you to cast out to where the fish are. You can
still catch fish without one but not with nearly as much consistency.\n\nF
 lies: Woolly buggers in black\, white\, purple\, olive\, midge\, caddis an
d mayfly nymphs to name a few. Flies may also available from club member J
im Hall who ties some very good flies specific to Pyramid cutthroat as wel
l as other species at reason-able cost. His number is (831) 713-6835. Ther
e is a general store with provisions as well as tackle and an assortment o
f flies.\n\nHow to get there: Take US 80 to Reno-Sparks\, take the Pyramid
Blvd. off ramp and go north about 35 miles. Crosby Lodge is at Sutcliff\,
near the Ranger Station. If you have any questions about equipment or how
to get there\, check the “Gearing up” columns in the March 2007-2009 a
rchives on our great club website\, or call Mike White at (831) 706-5556.I
f you are considering going to Pyramid again this year with the club and y
ou have not already done so\, please contact the person who is booking the
trailer you stayed in last year. Trailer-masters\, if your trailer has ga
ps or cancellations\, you can call Mike so he can pass the names of member
s who don’t have lodging to fill the empty spots.\n\nFishing\, Camping\,
and New Ladder Regulation: Fishing and camping permits can be purchased o
nline prior to the fish-out. We would highly recommend doing this. Go to w
ww.plpt.nsn.us to obtain your licenses. There is also an RV Park available
  at (775) 476-1155.Pyramid Lake Fishout\, March 15th-21st\, 2020\n\nAs wit
h any great fishery there are always a long list of rules and regulations.
We would recommend you review them on the website above. Suffice to say t
hose of us who have been go-ing to Pyramid Lake for many years are a good
source of infor-mation as well. We will help inform and guide all newcomer
 s.\n\n15.6 USE OF LADDERS\, ETC.Any ladders\, milk crates\, boxes or other
objects used in the water as a fishing aid must be occupied or closely at
tended (i.e. remain in the area) by fishermen at all times. Any person who
leaves such objects unoccupied in the water for more than one hour will b
e deemed guilty of littering. 15.6.1 Fishing aids described above must hav
e a permanent tag affixed that has the name\, address\, and phone number o
f the owner of the fishing aid. If the permitted angler using the fishing
aid is not the owner\, the owner will be the responsible party for any inf
ractions by the permitted angler.\n\nLast year I observed people parked cl
oser than 100 feet to the lake. I asked several of them about it\, and the
response was the Rangers weren’t enforcing it. This prompted me to cont
act the lead Ranger by phone. He said\, “We are most definitely going to
enforce the 100-foot ordinance!” So\, when parking your vehicle\, you m
ust be a minimum of 100 feet from the lake’s water line. Also\, you need
a permanent tag affixed to your ladder with your name\, address\, and pho
ne number on it. Most of us who use fiberglass ladders use a heavy black m
agic marker to write the necessary information directly on the ladder. The
re are also tags which can be purchased from local fly shops\, for a fee.\
n\nThis year I have four trailers reserved. (6\,7\,8\, and 9) As of Novemb
er 1st 2019 all trailers are full. Of course\, we will always try to accom
modate any newcomers\, so contact Mike at (831) 706-5556 and we will figur
e out a way for you to experi-ence the thrill of catching a 10-plus pound
LCT. You can always make your own arrangements by contacting the Pyramid L
 ake Lodge at (775) 476-0400.Mike White (831) 706-5556\, lumberguy73@hotmai
l.com\n\nNOTE: Due to insurance regulations\, all attendees must be paid u
p members of Santa Cruz Fly fishermen\, so get your member-ship paid up if
  you haven’t done so yet.

SUMMARY:Balance Leech
DESCRIPTION:At first glance this fly looks like your typical wooly bugger b
ut it's not.  It's tied in a way that allows it to hang in the water colu
mn in a horizontal plane or balanced.  Hung under an indicator in choppy
water the fly pulses and swims  the way a baitfish or leech does.  Profe
ssional fly anglers like Phil Rowley and Brian Chan are big advocates for
this pattern on still waters for trout and I'll vouch for it as a great ba
 ss pond fly.\n\n&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:We had a very successful first class on July 28. Four club memb

s working on perfecting the mechanics of the roll cast. The riverside site
can comfortably\naccommodate up to six casters. In order to prevent any c

\, or call and leave a\nmessage at (831) 338-6056. I will send an email me
ssage providing all necessary details to those who sign up.\n\nThe August
casting class will focus on the Pick-up and Lay-down (PULD) cast. This is
the foundation for all\noverhead fly casting. This lesson will be geared p
rimarily to beginner and novice fly casters\, so no prior casting\nexperie
nce is assumed (though the ability to do a basic roll cast would be helpfu
l.) The class will take place in\nBoulder Creek at 10 AM on Wednesday\, Au
gust 25. This month’s general lesson plan is to conduct a very brief\nre
view of the roll cast (for those who attended the July class) followed by
a systematic examination of the steps\ninvolved in a simple PULD cast. Tim
e permitting\, we will also cover the off-side PULD and false casting.\nPa
rticipants should plan to bring the rod of their choice\, a matching reel\
, and a floating line (or contact me to\nsee if I can arrange for loaner e
 quipment.)

SUMMARY:Alaska Trip
DESCRIPTION:Roy Gunter writes:   I am offering to sponsor a fishout to th

September 12\, 2021. Limited to 4 participants including Roy. We will sta

be fishing the Kenai River\, Russian River and nearby creeks\, targeting r
ainbows and dolly varden\, but catching many salmon along the way. Trip in
cludes 2 guided trips on the Kenai River\, including at least one boat tri
p down the Kenai River Canyon to the delta of Skilak Lake. You will have t
o provide your own airfare to Anchorage and return\, which can be arrange
for virtually no charge if you obtain an Alaska Airlines Credit Card.  Al
aska Airlines now flies out of Monterey. However\, a rental car is include
d in the trip. Food and beverages are included and obtained from Costco an
d Carrs Supermarket for preparation at the cabin. Since I am cooking for t
he most part\, meals are gourmet including wine and/or other beverages. Si
nce I am an Alaska Air card holder\, over the last 20 years I have never e
xceeded $2\,000 for the entire trip\, including the cost of a motel before
flying out\, and once paid only $770. Couples are welcome\, but there is
only one queen bed in a separate bedroom. Other Club Members who have acco

of your covid vaccinations at least 14 days prior to departure. Prior part
icipants have priority. If interested please contact Roy Gunter at 831-809

the Alaska Airlines Credit Card opportunity:  "Buy a new Alaska Airline c

est Beach out of Watsonville all the way towards the ocean until you are m
ired in the sand. You went just a bit too far\, so back up your 4WD about
100 feet and park on the right under the Eucalyptus trees that drip and st
ain your vehicle when they are wet. (Hint: Wash it off right away when you
get home.)\nBTW\, I like the State Beaches\, because when you are done\,
there is a shower nearby to wash the sand off your waders and salt off you
r gear before heading home.\nThis is our last “organized” surf fish-ou
t for 2021.  Last month most everyone caught fish or had hook-ups. Let’
 s do it again!

SUMMARY:O'Neill Forebay - Oct 7 - 10 2021
DESCRIPTION:The annual O'Neill ForeBay Striped Bass FishOut has been schedu
led for Oct 7-10 and Nov 4-7 (Thurs-Sunday). I made it during the dark pha
se of the moon this year.\n\nWe will camp at the same place again at Medei
ros Campground site #23 I will try to get again\, there are 4 sites there
and more than one car per site is okay. New people should contact me perso
nally for details. Bring everything to camp bare bones style\, only a sing
le vault style toilet which is not too bad compared to the other porta pot
ties throughout the campground.  Bring water\, and food and cooking gear\
, there will be a camp stove or two to use or cook over the camp fire.\n\n
Gear to use: 7 or 8 wt rod\, full sinking line like Rio Outbound Short or
Tungsten T-11 shooting head with a good running line. 15 lb test fluorocar
bon leader (6' is long enough so the fly gets down deeper).  Lee Haskins
or Jim Hall has flies for sale. Both are listed in our club roster and you
can make an order directly with them. Float tubes of course or small craf
t like flat bottom dingy's and some kayaks work okay except when windy. (I
t can really BLOW you away there and we hope for good conditions but we ha
ve had big rainstorms in years past so prepare for the worst).\n\nOne thin
g we never have enough of is firewood for the evening rap sessions\, the s
ize of wood that comes in a box at the grocery store is perfect for our po
rtable fire tubs.\n\nThe camp is only 70 miles from Santa Cruz and directi
ons can be easily be found on your GPS system.  Call or email me @ 831 46
2 4532 or ssrudzinski@gmail.com to be on the list so I have a good idea of
how many will attend.  We always have a good time at this event.  See y
 ou there\, Stosh\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;

DESCRIPTION:https://vimeo.com/638817971/6773cad0f1\n\nThis fly is my number
one choice for bass subsurface. I normally use an intermediate sink line
and trail this fly 24”-48” behind a green or black Woolybugger. I’ve
also caught trout and Stripers using the same system. Use a slow retrieve
  . Don’t be without this fly!\n\nPlease call Dan Eaton at (831) 336-2933
to sign up and I’ll get your packet of material together for you at my
front door. There is no charge for the class and all materials are provide
d except olive 8/0 and 6/0 thread. Or at least 8/0. If you need to borrow
club thread\, let me know. Beginners are welcome but you will have to cont
act Elaine Cook at (831)688-1561 well ahead of time to borrow vice \, and
tools.\n\nIf you would like to tune in to watch\, that's fine.

SUMMARY:Red Bead Cone Head
DESCRIPTION:Here is a great one for you beginners. So get out that new vise
and tools that you got at Christmas and join in. You can also borrow thos
e as well as thread if needed. The thread this month is black 6/0. You may
ask\, after looking at the photo\, “Where is the red bead?” When the
fly gets wet it glows through the dubbing. You may have noticed a couple b
ass club Fishouts pop up on the fishout schedule for spring. Dan Eaton wil
l be fishmastering them and he highly recommends this fly and the Fly Of T
he Month to target these fish subsurface. Give me a call to sign up and I
’ll prepare a bag of materials for you and put it by my door. NO CHARGE
FOR THE CLASS as usual. (831)688-1561
