Hobo Spey

by Elaine Cook – fly tying chairman

Are you getting ready for the early season, steelhead and trout? If so, our very experience club member and guide Alex Ferber is recommending this fly. The flies in the photos are his.
NOTE: all the materials are attached very far forward on the hook, shank and bunched tightly together.
NOTE: the pictures show three different different views of the fly top side and looking down inside.

HOOK: TMC 300 SIZE 6.  Crimp barb.
THREAD:  Black, Ultra UTC 140 denier.  Attach behind eye. Touching wraps to 1/3 back on shank.
BUTT: Pink Arctic fox or ice dub.  Using a dubbing loop, form a ball of material, covering a small section of the shank. Tie off cut access brush fibers to rear and pull off excess.
HACKLE: Pink Guinea hen.   Stroke barbs. against grain. Tie in tip with dark side up and butt to rear. Cut off excess tip. Make two wraps immediately in front of butt ball. Tie off cut excess.
MARABOU: Black spay marabou with long barbs that will reach beyond the end of the fly.   Strip off some barbs at the butt end of the stem.  Tie in tip, same manner as hackle. Wrap around shank multiple times while stroking barbs to rear with each wrap.  Tie off, cut access.
WING: Amherst feather or black crystal flash.    Use about four barbs of feather or strands of crystal flash. Tie  2 to top of shank, slightly angled outward and extending beyond rear of hook. Tired, two more slightly angled toward you. If using barbs curve should arc downward.
HEAD: thread.    wrap, narrow straight head up to Hawkeye. Whip finish, cut thread, apply glue to head.
