In early October, we wrapped up our annual two-week Mammoth Lakes Fishout, a tradition that dates back to 1992. After running the fishout for more than 20 years, John and Elaine Cook handed over the reins to Randy Saar and Scott Kitayama. Being no dummies, Randy and Scott decided there was no reason to mess with a good thing and ran the fishout pretty much the same way John and Elaine had for years!
The fishing was good, with standout spots including Crowley Lake, Twin Lakes, and Little Lakes Valley. Members also found success at Hot Creek, the Upper Owens River, and McLeod Lake. With so many great waters to choose from, there was plenty of opportunity to explore, catch fish, and enjoy the Eastern Sierra.
We welcomed five newcomers this year: Ron Antipa, Fred Farias, Meredith Hammig, Matt Bohn, and Beth Ahlgern. Returning members included John and Elaine Cook, Bob Peterson, Scott Kitayama, Randy Saar, Dan Eaton, Bob Garbarino and Michael Sherwood. Check out their photos and captions to read about the group’s favorite memories from the trip.

No great adventure goes off without a hitch, and neither did this fishout. Elaine warned us that there are many bears around Mammoth and to remove any food or items that smell like food from the vehicles. On her final day, Meredith was visited by a bear that wanted her gummy nerds and cucumber face wipes! Randy was slowed down by a flat near the Upper Owens.

Looking Ahead to 2027
It’s already time to start planning next year’s Mammoth Lakes Fishout, scheduled for September 25 through October 9, 2027. We may even be able to secure another condo in the same complex, giving us room to welcome more members.
Interested in joining us? Email Scott and Randy at scottkitayama@gmail.com and randy_saar@yahoo.com so we can get an idea of how many people are interested and begin planning accommodations.
Sign-ups will open at the March 3 general meeting. We are hoping to keep the per-week costs the same at $500 per person or $800 for an individual wanting a room to themselves, but we won’t know for sure until we lock in the accommodations.
There will also be a special opportunity at the Annual Dinner: a silent auction for two spots sharing a room, for either week of the fishout. The winning bidder gets an early reservation, a guaranteed room, and first choice of week—a month before general sign-ups open. It’s a great way to lock in your spot while helping support the club.
So start thinking about those Eastern Sierra trout, beautiful fall scenery, and good times with fellow club members. We hope to see you in Mammoth in 2027!
