Helpful Hints for Fly Tying

by Elaine Cook - Fly Tying Chairman

If your marabou plumes come with barbs clumped together, they can easily be fluffed up again with a toothbrush.

The metal in large hooks is often difficult to crimp the barb down .  Clamp your pliers on the barb from the side of the hook and rotate your pliers down and up several times. This should help.

Sometimes when using a floss threader to feed the thread through your bobbin it sticks. Cut the tip of the floss threader at an angle, and it will slip through very easily. Also never use a wire to thread your bobbin. In time it will score the inside and start cutting your thread. A floss threader is a dental item that you can find in any pharmacy.
