When the stripers start boiling at the top of the surface, this is a fly you ought to use. As always, the classes, are freeand materials are provided. If you have white,flat waxed nylon, please bring it. We will also be using either 6/0 or 3/0. The club will have thread to borrow. For you beginners there will be equipment to use as well. We will be tying a streamer fly that is particularly successful at Crowley Lake near Mammoth. Tie up a few for the fishout there at the end of the month. It imitates a bait fish so will work in many stillwaters for bass or trout. Please bring your equipment and red 6/0 thread. If you don’t have 6/0, 8/0 will work as well. There will be a red sharpie pen to color any light colored thread.For you beginners, everything will be provided for you to borrow. As always, the class is free and all materials provided. Sign ups are very important in order to have enough material for all. Please do that at the club meeting or call with at least 24 hours notice. 831-234-6515

August Fly Tying Class: Crackleback Dry Wooly

Crackleback Dry Wooly. This fly pattern is a great, generic representation of several insects found at stream or lakes. It can be fished dry or wet. Much like a Griffith’s Gnat but has far more color and material variations to match a variety of hatches. You need these in your fly box. “Expect near instant success!”

Class is free!!

Provided: All materials except thread (some available for beginners ) instructions, helpful assistance, and demonstrations.

Bring: Thread( black, brown or hot red 8/0) vice, tools, magnification, and glasses as needed. (Some are available for beginners).

This fly is a simplified Stimulator pattern that keys in on the buoyant properties of the fly without some of the more complicated techniques. It’s a great dry/dropper pattern. The CDC and EP fiber wings have a great silhouette and the fly rides high in the water. This is a great caddis pattern (especially October caddis). You can play around with color combinations to match the caddis in your area. This fly is great for a hopper dropper set ups as well.

June Fly Tying Class: Royal Trude

The fly for the June fly tying class is the Royal Trude. Participants will need black thread.
The Royal Trude is a classic, versatile attractor fly pattern known for its bold appearance and ability to float well in rough water, featuring a calf hair wing, golden pheasant tail, peacock body, and a heavy brown hackle. We use it to imitate caddis and ants, as well as a general attractor. The royal trude is still one of the most versatile attractors in the west.

There will be a sign-up sheet at the monthly club meeting the week prior to this fly tying class (June 4th). Greg will also be present at the May club meeting with the sign up sheet.

April Fly Tying Class: Cicada

Cicadas are a large insect, are not aquatic, and hatch out in spring throughout the United States. They end up in the water on windy days in particular, but also, they are very poor pilots and are hatching out in the trees around rivers and streams. Trout and bass truly love these bugs. They’re made out of foam so are a high floaters. For those going to the Green River you will want to have a few of these in your box. It may be just a little too early for the cicadas to be out, but the fish have not forgotten about them.
As always, the class is free and materials provided. If you have black six on thread do bring it. We welcome you beginners and have vice and tools and thread for you to borrow. Sign ups are important so that enough material is there for those attending. Please sign up at the next club meeting or call me no later than the day before the class. 831-234-6515.

It’s time to get ready for the bass and bluegill season with some of these top water creations. This is a two day class that is a very artsy crafty and beginners should feel comfortable in attending. All the materials will be provided including the thread. Vises and tools will be available for beginners. For those going to the Green River fishout in April, it is being recommended by a particular guide named Gino who has guided there for many many years. No fly tying class in January 2025

FLY TYING CLASS MESSAGES :

Sorry folks, we won’t be having a class in January because the first is New Year’s Day.Therefore, the club meeting will be held on the second Wednesday of the month.
Here is a big thank you to all of you who helped with the classes this year. Some of you were instructors and others helped beginners foregoing tying your own fly. Club members truely appreciate your help and guidance.
Looking forward: the class in February will be Gino’s Midge Emerger, as usual on the second Wednesday of the month. In March, we will have our annual popper class on the weekend of the 15th and 16th. Limited space so sign up early.

December Fly Tying Class: BWO Thorax Style

This dry fly pattern is an adult mayfly. These insects hatch all over the United States, very readily in the spring and summer. The “BWO” stands for blue wing olive. If you are one of the people going to the green river in April, this fly is an absolute must. November Fly Tying Class: Colorado King Caddis

This dry fly pattern for trout can be tied in sizes 8 to 18, so will work in a great variety of places. I particularly like one of the larger sizes for using in the Rocky Mountains. We will use a larger hook for the class. This is not a difficult fly to tie so you beginners should feel comfortable participating. The fly includes peccary, which is seldom used for tying flies. You more experienced tyers should find the technique using this material interesting. As always all the materials are provided and if you have 6/0 black thread, please bring it. Our club member, Tommy Polito, is having much success in both the surf and forebay catching stripers using this fly.. He is also finding other fish species are attracted to the fly as well. Our class this month will feature a stillwater pattern for trout. If you’re going to Mammoth, you’ll want to have a few of these with you to fish Crowley. It’s a relatively easy fly to tie, so if you were thinking about learning to tie flies, come on down. We always have equipment available for people to borrow. All materials are provided and if you have black 8/0 and red 6/0 thread do bring them. The red will only be used for the head, so several bobbins will already have the red thread on them to share.

Summer and fall are the best times to use this trout fly. It’s best used in small streams where the water is not real turbulent. The Sierras are great for this fly. It also works well in stillwater and quiet parts of rivers.
The class is free and materials provided. If you have 8/0 black thread, please bring it. As always, bring your vice and tools.

For you beginners, there will be what you need to participate and you are always welcome and encouraged to come. Be sure to bring prescription glasses and if you have magnification, bring that as well.

CDC Jig Style Hairs Ear Nymph

Description of Fly: This is my favorite all around nymph pattern. It is very versatile and has accounted for many large trout around the US. From central Pennsylvania spring creeks, Appalachian mountain streams, Putah Creek and Hamilton Branch in California, to the Beaverhead River in Montana…it just produces fish. It is perfect in smaller sizes for picky spring creek fish and in larger sizes it makes a great point fly for czech style nymphing. The jig head keeps the hook riding up which keeps the hook point sharper and reduces snags. The CDC collar traps bubbles and looks very buggy. This is a great all around pattern for mayflies, smaller stoneflies, and even caddis pupa.

Provided: All materials except thread (some will be available for beginners), instructions, demonstration, and helpful assistance.

Bring: Olive, pink, or grey 70 denier or 8/0 thread, vise, tools, magnification, and glasses as needed. (some will be available for beginners) who are always welcome.

This class will feature how to handle deer hair as a wing. Greg Foy will be the instructor and I will be there to assist as my foot is still healing and limits my mobility. This fly was created by Andy Puyans back in the 1960s. He was a well-known fly tyer and this pattern has been successfully used for decades in waters that hold mayflies. If you are planning to fish Los Padres Reservoir or Lake Almanor, be sure to have a few of these with you. It can be tied in sizes 10 to 18 and for our class we will be using a size 10 hook, an easy size to handle. Our fly tying classes are always free and materials provided. For beginners, who are always welcome, vices and tools are available. If you have black 6/0 thread please bring it. This fly originated in England, and became extremely popular until they outlawed because it was too successful. It is now becoming very popular in the states, and having the same results including at Pyramid Lake. We will be having a club fish out there in early April so be sure and bring a few of these flies with you. It’s tied in a variety of ways and we will be tying one that was particularly successful at Pyramid this last year. For those of you who are new to our club, the classes are always free with materials provided.For people who are new to fly tying, tools, vices, and thread are made available. For those who have thread bring white flat waxed nylon or similar. Our fly this month was originated by Jay Fair many years ago, and he’s considered one of the best stillwater fly fisherman there has been in Northern California. He passed away a number of years ago, but his flies and the materials that he developed are sought after even today. This is an easy fly to tie and is thought to be one of the most effective lake and pond fly patterns around. As always, the class is free and materials provided. If you have a black, six ought thread, please bring it, some will be available for beginners. You beginners ought to plan on attending this class, and tools and vises are available for you to use. Kathy Powers will be conducting the class this month. She is one of the most skilled fly tires we have in the club and loves to share her knowledge and skills with others. As the name implies, the October caddis is an insect that hatches out during October. It is particularly prolific on the upper Sacramento River. But can be found in many other places including the Merced River just outside Yosemite. If you are a beginner, you are definitely welcome and vices and tools will be available for you to use. The classes are free and materials provided. Students are encouraged to bring orange 6/0 thread or 120 denier. Thread will be available for beginners, please note if you don’t have orange thread, bring a white or light colored thread and we can use a sharpie to color it. Chubby Chernobyl – August Fly Tying Class

This fly just works. It makes a great hopper/dropper top fly and it catches fish on it’s own. No dry fly hackle or other expensive materials and it can be tied and just about any color. We’ll be tying this one in purple which is probably my favorite version. It’s also not too difficult to tie making it great for beginners.

Purple, black or dark thread in 6/0 or 70 denier works well but anything close will do. I’ll have some extra thread. Another thing to bring, if you have it is super glue. All materials provided. Please bring your vise and tools but if you need anything, let me know.

July Fly-tying Class

John Barr’s “Copper John” is our fly for this month’s class . This attractor fly has a stonefly nymph’s biot tail with a red wire body and a mayfly like thorax. The bead head and wire body help the fly sink to the bottom of the water column and hopefully grab the attention of some chunky opportunistic trout. Bring black 6/0 or 8/0 thread, other materials will be supplied. The club has tools to lend for beginners. I hope to see you there! My phone number is below, please text message or call to sign up.

Damselfly Nymph

Damselflies will be featured this month and next for our fly tying classes. Adult in June and nymph in June. Trout, largemouth bass and bluegill will go for this particular insect. As usual, all the materials will be provided for the class, except for the thread, and no charge to participate. The thread this month olive 8/0 and bobbin. Some will be available to borrow. If you have a light colored thread, such as white, tan or yellow, you can bring it and we’ll color it with a sharpie pen. Tools and vices and thread are available for beginners, who are always welcome. It never hurts to bring a lamp and magnification.
